It’s no secret that investing in real estate is by far the best and most efficient way to build real, lasting wealth today. However, real estate investing can be complicated, which is why it pays to learn from those who have gone before. Outside of credible mentors, I always say a good book is the best place to start for solid real estate advice. Here is my list of the best books on real estate investing.
The Best Books on Real Estate Investing
I honestly believe that for the average Joe, real estate investing is by FAR the best, most efficient, and most enjoyable way to grow your wealth. I have been investing in real estate for half a decade already (wow!), and continually discover new and useful knowledge and tricks of the trade. Which is why I continuously dedicate myself to reading books on the subject.
However, when it comes to real estate investing, not all books are created equal! So before you pick up your first book on real estate investing, check out these lists and find one that fits your goals.
My Real Estate Story
At this point in time I am proud and infinitely grateful to have been calling myself a real estate investor for the better part of a decade. I have bought and sold flips, completed wholesale deals with both single family and commercial mobile home parks, and bought single and multifamily rentals. In addition, I even started my own podcast and YouTube show called “The Real Estate Investing Club“.
In other words, I’ve had a fair bit of experience when it comes to investing, and am thankful beyond words to have gotten to where I am today. However, my having gotten here was never guaranteed! When I first got started in real estate investing, my path was headed in a very different direction.
The Beginning of My Journey Into Real Estate Investing
At the beginning of my investing journey, I was a dissatisfied corporate management consultant worker bee, blindly climbing the “corporate ladder” with no real interest in what I was doing.
I distinctly remember one morning in particular when I realized I was on the wrong path.
Employed at Microsoft, I was 23 years old, working as a Business Analyst consultant in Redmond, WA. I had woken up early that morning and was preparing for the day, looking over my calendar at the tasks I had ahead of me.
As I opened my computer to go through my morning email, a sense of dread and disgust made it so the lid felt as if it were 1,000 pounds. In other words, I hated my job, and couldn’t bring myself to get started.
After that point, I knew I had to make some sort of change.
Enter My First Best Book for Real Estate Investing
As I didn’t know exactly what else I should be doing with my life, I kept working as a consultant for some time. It wasn’t until I happened upon Robert Kiyosaki’s “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” that the fog slowly began to lift.
After finishing Robert’s book, it was as if an entirely new world had been revealed to me; a world that didn’t involve hours of sitting in traffic, suffering through endless meetings about things I didn’t care for, or trading my time (aka my life!) for money.
Needless to say, I was pretty stoked about the world Robert had shown me.
My First Foray Into Real Estate Investing
With a little money saved up in the bank, I decided to buy my first real estate investment with a friend of mine in the form of a run down triplex two towns over from where I lived.
However, I soon found out that general knowledge only gets you so far. With little in terms of a rehab budget, my friend and I got busy cleaning up the property from the previous hoarder who had occupied the unit.
Saying it was a pile of rubbish is putting it lightly.
However, after countless trips to the dump, one pipe bursting, and a few calls to the city to tow away abandoned cars, we had officially “flipped” the property. After that, we sold it for a breezy $70,000 in profit.
The Best Books on Real Estate Investing and Building a Real Estate Investing Business
At that point, I was hooked. And as they say, the rest is history.
In short, if I hadn’t gotten my hands on Robert’s book, I would never have bought that first triplex, and most likely would not be where I am today.
From that point on, I decided investing in real estate would be my primary focus. Even so, I knew I couldn’t just “fly by the seed of my pants”. I needed time-tested wisdom from people who had already seen success in real estate investing.
So I started buying more books on real estate investing. And thus was born the list on the best books of real estate investing.
Without further ado, let’s get into the top ten essential best books for real estate investing.
The Best Books on Real Estate Investing List, And How To Read This Blog Post
I understand everyone has different goals and interests; if you’re more into commercial real estate investing, then it won’t do you much good to read a book on investing in single family residential properties! Which is why I’ve broken this list out into categories by asset class.
A Summary of the Sections
The first list will be my overall list of the best books on general real estate investing. These books are the books you’ll want to read if you’re just getting in to investing and haven’t chosen a specific path yet.
The next three lists are focused around the best real estate investing books for individual strategies or asset classes. Go to these lists if you already know that you want to invest in, say multifamily or commercial properties.
The last lists has nothing to do with real estate at all, and everything to do with the general principal of high performance. I’ve learned in my own life that it doesn’t matter how much you know about a thing, if you don’t believe you can achieve your goal you won’t take the necessary steps. For this reason, I added a list for general motivation.
At the very, very end of this blog post I’ll write out my personal favorite book on the topic of real estate investing. If you’re already an investor, you can probably guess which book this will be. Nonetheless, if you haven’t yet read my best book for real estate investing, I would highly encourage you to pick it up. Regardless of your real estate investing expertise!

My Favorite Top Ten Essential Real Estate Investing Book
The first book on this list will be The Millionaire Real Estate Investor by Gary Keller. This is one of my all time favorite books on investing in real estate as it is chuck full of real estate wisdom. Therefore, it warrants a place on the list of best books on real estate investing.
It also happens to be one of the first books I read that got me interested in the potential of investing in real estate, so I may be a bit biased.
Why I Loved The Millionaire Real Estate Investor
Besides the obvious reason of it being one of my first books in real estate investing, this book is by far one of the most comprehensive books out there on the topic of investing in real estate. In fact, I would go so far as to say if there is one single book you buy, this should be the book.
What I love about this book is that the author does not assume you’re independently wealthy. In fact, he assumes you’re coming from the perspective of someone who’s looking forward to wealth. And will use real estate and the vessel.

After having started a podcast on the topic and heard the real estate investing story of hundreds of investors, I’m fairly certain 99% of all investors get their start in single family properties.

My Favorite Single Family Residential Book
Investing in single family properties is near and dear to my heart as it’s the first thing that really made me feel like I was a real investor. That is to say, there’s nothing like the feeling of completing a single family flip to get you motivated!
However, fix and flips are not for the faint of heart. Which is why I highly recommend considering the BRRRR strategy when looking at your single family exit strategy.
With that said, if there’s one book on the subject of investing in single family rentals that stands above the rest, it would be “Hold: How to Find, Buy, and Rent Houses for Wealth” by Steve Chader. Therefore, it earns it’s place among the best books on real estate investing.
Why I Loved Hold
As I mentioned before, I believe investing in single family real estate is a great way to get started in the industry.
However, HGTV shows like “Love It Or List It” and “Fixer Upper” show flipping as the golden standard of real estate investing.
For beginners, I do NOT think fix n flip is the best exit strategy to pursue.
On the other hand, buy and holds are a solid strategy for beginners. Consequently, I would recommend a book on buying and renting out properties to anyone interested in single family investing.
And there’s never been a book that outlines the single family investing strategy better than “Hold“.
Hold is incredibly detailed, works from the fundamentals of real estate investing, and goes through every phase of investing in single family properties.

For that reason, this list is particularly difficult to create, as there’s an abundance of great advice out there for those interested in investing in multifamily real estate.
In short, if investing in Multifamily Residential (MFR) properties is your gig, these are the books to consider.

With commercial real estate, the exact opposite is true. Above all, commercial is the world of business.

My Favorite Book for Mindset & Motivation
This is by far the most difficult decision I have made thus far. As is probably obvious by now, I enjoy reading non-fiction. A lot.
In fact, if any of my friends or family were to answer the question, “What is unique about Gabe” I’m sure at least one of them would say, “He’s oddly invested in reading books.”
With that said, there is one book that has had a tremendous impact on my life. More-so than any other book I’ve read in my life.
That book is “On The Shortness of Life: Life is Long if You Know How To Use it“, by Seneca.
Why I Loved On The Shortness of Life
As this is a blog post on the best books on real estate investing, I cannot legitimately name a non-real estate investing book as my favorite book of all time within the category.
Even so, if there’s one book that has changed my perspective on life for the better it would be this small-but-mighty book by Seneca.
In short, there are few other books that are as packed with truly insightful bits of wisdom than On the Shortness of Life. Any page I open to in my copy of the book, you’ll find under-linings and notes in the margin of the page.
In fact, I’ll go ahead and prove my point by randomly opening to a page and picking a single paragraph to quote here.
An Example Of Seneca’s Wisdom
And I quote,
Then we must appraise the actual things we are attempting and match our strength to what we are going to undertake. For the performer must always be stronger than his task: loads that are too heavy for the bearer are bound to overwhelm him. Moreover, certain tasks are not so much great as prolific in producing many other tasks: we must avoid those which give birth in turn to new and manifold activities, and not approach something from which we cannot easily withdraw. You must set your hands to tasks which you can finish or at least hope to finish; and avoid those which get bigger as you proceed and do not cease where you had intended.
We must be especially careful in choosing people, and deciding whether they are worth devoting a part of our lives to them, whether the sacrifice of our time makes a difference to them.Seneca
I promise you, that was a random quote, on a random page. The book is overflowing with wisdom of this sort.
Moreover, success in life has been a funny thing. It’s not what I think it is, and it does not come to me simply by focusing on it. It comes as a result of truly enjoying what it is I do.
However, the natural instinct is to focus my energy on what it is I believe will bring me security and status.
To combat that natural urge, I read Seneca.
Senaca, and any book on Stoicism for that matter, focus my mind on what actually matters. In short, it’s the best book to prepare yourself for investing in real estate.
My All-Time Favorite Best Books on Real Estate Investing
If you were to choose one, single book to read on the subject of investing in real estate, the single best book is Rich Dad Poor Dad: What the Rich Teach Their Kids About Money That the Poor and Middle Class Do Not! by Robert Kiyosaki.
Certainly, this is the book that has had the biggest impact on the most number of investors across the globe.
And moreover, it’s the book that started my career in investing.

When it comes to real estate investing, there’s no book that better outlines the why of real estate investing than Robert Kiyosaki’s, “Rich Dad, Poor Dad“.
In fact, on Amazon alone, this book alone has over 18,000 reviews, with an average rating of 4.5!
